The JPEG (or JPG) image format is currently the most commonly used digital image format. JPEG is an acronym for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPEG images files are compressed to relatively small sizes using a lossy compression algorithm that supports 8 bits per color (red, green, blue). Due to lossy compression, repeated editing and saving results in image degradation.

JPEG files are ideally suited for web use due to their small file size.
